Spiral butter cookies – mini chefs in the kitchen

In previous posts, i mentioned the reasons you should enjoy cooking with your kids, for how much benefits it has. To recapitulate:

  • Literacy (building vocabulary): cooking with kids gives you the opportunity to introduce new words. You will be talking about the ingredients which gives them food knowledge. They will be observing and talking about the process  as well (like creaming, whisking,…). It’s good  to mention the new words several times and put them in a sentence they will understand and repeat after you. And when you read for them the recipe (if they can’t read yet) they will learn also that there is a method and instructions to follow. When am with with my son i enjoy mostly the open conversation we have all the time of cooking.
  • Brain development by exploring their senses: sensory experience is essential for the brain development. Cooking engage all the senses of your kids; seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and tasting (especially smelling and tasting). My son is the curious type he likes to taste everything!
  • Motor skills: Developing fine and gross motor skills is as important as the sensory experience. They will be training their tiny muscles (fingers, hands, arms and even all body) by stirring, whisking, beating, kneading….. I love watching my son doing all this, i see a small proud man using his beautiful hands magically 🙂
  • Math and logic: By counting and using the measuring cups or spoons to follow the accurate recipe.
  • Self esteem: you will experience the look of confidence and pride on your kid’s face when he sees the outcome and especially when he offers it to others. When i bake with my son, he keeps on telling what he did to everyone he sees, and insists on offering some of “his creations” and waiting for the rewards for his efforts.

All these benefits go without neglecting the amount of fun we have and the quality time together which is sacred for me.

The most important thing though is you don’t force the learning to happen, it should flow naturally. The golden rule is to enjoy the time with your kids in the kitchen.

If you like to cook with your kids but you are struggling to find simple recipes to do, here is one easy recipe, Nady shared with his friend Gia mae.

You will need:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 300g butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • food coloring

Mix butter, flour and sugar, and rub them until they become like sand. Add the eggs then vanilla. Mix well but don’t over mix. Divide the dough in half. Take one part and divide it as much as colors you want to use. We did 5! Roll the first half in rectangular shape, then the colored ones as strips within a rectangle. Put The colored rectangular dough on top of the first part and roll, following the scheme. Let it rest in the fridge for at least half an hour before cutting it.

No doubt, cooking with kids takes more time and effort, but for the many learning experiences you can embrace while your kids are in the kitchen, and the fun you share, i encourage you to do it more often.

M&M wheels experience – little scientist

mm-wheel-experience-little-scientist-marmite-et-ponpon

Experimental science, one of the favorite activities that Nady really enjoys and looks forward to! He is absolutely fascinated by science, for him it’s magic, mystery and fun. I totally understand him since we share same interest and enthusiasm, i am as passionate as him when experiencing something for the first time 🙂

It’s been a while i see on the net the M&M experience, so i decided to take it to another level and make it more interesting and fun.

Already having the M&M creating those colorful streams when melting with warm water is something, but what if we make it as the bicycle wheels to create optical illusion?!

First draw the bicycle and use two white plates as wheels. Place the M&M in circle then pour inside each circle warm water.

Watch how the melting M&M start forming rays/ streams of colors inside of the wheel

Place one M&M in the center to make it look like a real wheel

Watch out not to shake the plates to keep the lines defined. Nady was so excited he moved the plates, that’s why you see the colors a bit mixed. But it’s ok, it’s not the end of fun 🙂

And here is our beautiful bicycle, that looks like moving. Isn’t it?

melting crayons art

It’s been a while i saw this fun art and wanted to explore it with my son. I was delaying it being afraid my younger boy would be scared of the dryer noise. But surprisingly he likes it :), so lets melt some crayons.

So easy to do, all you need is a canvas or a thick cardboard, wax crayons and glue to stick them on. When you peel the crayons, leave a small part of the paper to be able to stick them on the board. Use a hair dryer to melt the crayons down and create an arbitrary bold art piece.

This project focuses on the fun of making it rather on precision and final outcome. That’s why it’s a fun art project for kids, they will have a blast melting down the crayons.

When satisfied with the end result and stopped melting the crayons, it takes maximum 15 minutes to dry. Make sure to cover the surface where you are playing because it’s a really messy game but trust me it’s worth it.

Turn it upside down for a more fun crayon art frame. I am sure you will hang it on your wall and plan for another session to explore more of this fun project.

This is our final piece of art!

We will return back to this game and i will promise more fun introducing new design elements and a theme of course.

Balloon science – My Little Scientist

balloon science |marmite et ponpon

Outside the temperature hits the 50°C (Doha) , it’s ramadan (the daily fast from dawn until sunset during this month of the Muslim calendar) and nowhere to go during the day. School is over and the entertainment challenge is back until we travel home (Lebanon)for the summer vacations.

The challenge of non stop playtime is to keep it interesting and captivating. So nothing is better than the magical science experiments.

The magic: blowing up balloons with the bubbles of baking soda and vinegar.

The science: chemical reaction when you mix baking soda and vinegar can be used to blow up a balloon due to gas released.

balloon science | marmite et ponpon

It’s a fun learning activity for all ages. All you need is empty bottles, white vinegar, balloons, baking soda and food coloring (optional).

Fill half the balloons with baking soda and 1/3 to half the bottles with vinegar (the more you put the stronger the chemical reaction is). You can put food coloring in the vinegar for more fun, you can see better the reaction (bubbles).

Attach the balloon to the bottle, but don’t let the baking soda pour out just yet.

Empty out the baking soda and watch the reaction unfold. The combination of vinegar and baking soda will bubble up, and the gas released will blow up your balloon!

We had a lot of screams and laughter! It’s really magical for kids, you can explain the reaction to your kid according to his age. Nady who is 3 years and a half, knows by now that when you mix baking soda and vinegar, a gas is released and it inflates the balloon.

Enjoy this fun science project and expect not to stop until you run out of baking soda or vinegar!

I am in love with pictures, for me it’s a way to freeze precious moments and recall them whenever i want. Just by looking at a picture, i go back to that moment…

This clothpins frame is an amazing way to decorate your home with as many pictures you want, and in the same time a fun and easy craft to your little one.

All you need is a cardboard and few clothpins.

I used the cardboard that comes underneath the cake, it’s already cut in round shape, then i cut another circle inside. You choose the size you want, depending on how many pictures to want to display. Nady colored it with gold and silver paint.

When it became completely dry we stuck the clothpins. You can keep them as they are or decorate them with washi tape or simply paint them. Be careful to keep the opening part to the outside to insert the pictures later.

Mount it on your wall to add life to your home!
